Creating a Network, Part 2

Welcome back! Last week, we kicked off our series on navigating the professional world with mentors and sponsors. Today, we dive deeper into building those genuine relationships that can propel your career forward.

3. Build Genuine Relationships

  1. Seek Genuine Relationships. There’s nothing more off-putting than receiving a request from someone out of the blue, only to never hear from them again once they’ve gotten what they wanted. This transactional approach is a far cry from what you should aim for when seeking out mentors and sponsors. These relationships are intended to be long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships. So, approach them thoughtfully.
  2. Be Authentic. Get to know your potential mentors and sponsors, and allow them to get to know the real you. The stronger your connection, the better they can guide and advocate for you. Be your authentic self; no one wants to feel like you’re putting on a show. Approach them with genuine interest and respect. Trust me, people can tell when you’re not sincere.
  3. Show Dedication and Appreciation. Express gratitude for their time and insights, and follow through on their recommendations. If something they suggest feels uncomfortable, seek to understand their rationale and see if you can achieve the outcome in a way that feels more authentic to you.

4. Show Your Dedication

  1. Be Proactive: Take the initiative in seeking advice and setting up meetings. Don’t wait for them to reach out.
  2. Show Eagerness to Learn: Display a willingness to learn and grow. Your enthusiasm will be contagious.
  3. Implement Feedback: Act on the guidance and feedback you receive. This shows that you value their input and are committed to your growth.

5. Regularly Communicate

  1. Scheduled Meetings: Set up regular check-ins to discuss your progress and new goals. Consistency is key.
  2. Updates: Keep your mentors and sponsors informed about your achievements. This keeps them invested in your journey.
  3. Mutual Benefit: Look for ways to add value to their lives. Whether it’s sharing a useful resource or simply offering your support, make the relationship reciprocal.

6. Diversify Your Circle

  1. Multiple Mentors: Have mentors with diverse backgrounds and expertise. This will give you a well-rounded perspective.
  2. Cross-Industry Connections: Consider mentors and sponsors from different industries. They can offer fresh insights and innovative approaches.
  3. Peer Mentors: Include peers who are at a similar stage in their careers. They can provide camaraderie and support.

7. Join Formal Programs and Initiatives

  1. Mentorship Programs: Join formal mentorship programs offered by your organization or professional associations. These programs can facilitate valuable connections.
  2. Sponsorship Initiatives: Seek out programs designed to connect employees with sponsors. These can be game-changers for your career.

8. Show Long-Term Commitment

  1. Longevity: Aim to build long-term relationships. These enduring connections will be a cornerstone of your professional network.
  2. Reciprocity: Offer your support and assistance to your mentors and sponsors. Remember, it’s a two-way street.

Example Approach

Find a Potential Mentor: Identify a senior leader in your organization whose strategic thinking and leadership skills you admire.

Make First Contact: Send a personalized message expressing your admiration for their work and ask if they would be willing to meet with you at their convenience.

The First Meeting: Have specific questions and topics ready for discussion. Do your research so that you know about their interests and accomplishments.

During the Meeting: Be ready to talk extensively about topics in which they are interested. Ask them if they would consider being your mentor or sponsor. Be clear about how the relationship would impact you and help you achieve your goals. Ask if there is a way that you can help them.

Follow-Up: After the meeting, send a thank-you note and cite one or two things that you learned or enjoyed. If they gave you an action step, follow up again when you have completed it and share the outcome.

Regular Check-Ins: Schedule regular meetings at a frequency that works for both of your schedules to discuss new challenges and seek further guidance. Share updates about your life in which you think they would be interested, and be consistent in letting them know how you are implementing their recommendations and the outcomes.

Bringing It To A Close

By maintaining a proactive, authentic, and reciprocal approach, you can successfully build a trusted circle of mentors and sponsors that will support your growth and help you achieve your goals. Take note of how you feel during the process so that when you have a chance to be a mentor or sponsor you can do an excellent job. Let’s continue to rise together, leaning on each other as we climb the ladder of success. Until next time, stay dedicated and stay genuine!
